Women Engineering Projects In Community Service (WEPICS) is an exciting opportunity for STEM women students, engineers, entrepreneurs as well as researchers to nurture innovation and entrepreneurship to support the sustainable development of the local community.

WEPICS brings chances for women to:

  • To help the community
  • To satisfy their passion in research, creating and building
  • To be motivated in STEM fields through projects and entrepreneurship

Teams participating in WEPICS are encouraged to work on projects that help to solve real problems that the local community is facing. Teams can submit an idea to improve existing solutions or they may create an innovative new solution to a problem in the community using STEM. Proposed ideas MUST be original – not previously submitted to any other competition or program.

Competition Timeline

  • 01 January, 2017: Registration Opens. Participants must register online with their team of 4 persons or less and propose an original idea for a STEM project that addresses a problem in the community. Ideas must be submitted by the deadline of January 15, 2017.
  • 15 January, 2017: Deadline for competition registration.

Idea Presentation Prep

After teams have submitted their original idea, they will have until February 18, 2017 to prepare to present their idea before our panel of judges.

Field Trips (Optional)

If registered teams need assistance in developing their idea, WEPICS will arrange community field trips for groups of teams to venture into the community to learn more about certain sector’s needs and demands. The field trips are meant to inspire ideas for solutions to visible problems in the community.

Create a Video

Each team will need to create a video explaining their proposed idea. The team will post the video online via Facebook or YouTube, and call for public votes via social media. The team will also submit the video link to WEPICS so our judging committee can track the number of votes each video receives online through February 17, 2017.

18 February, 2017: Round 1 competition - Idea Presentations

Presentations in Danang, Vietnam.

All teams present their ideas at the Round 1 Semi-Finals. Ideas cannot have been previously submitted to any other program or competition. Assessment of ideas will be 40% online community popular vote and 60% WEPICS Board of Judges.

The Board of Judges will determine the best ideas by:           

- Applicability in community – determined by votes, feedbacks, surveys, etc.           

- Innovation           

- Economic feasibility

Two (2) outstanding ideas will each be awarded a $250 USD Cash Project Development Scholarship

Eight to Ten (8-10) exemplary project ideas will be selected to continue to Round 2.

The teams selected to continue to Round 2 will each be awarded:           

- A budget of up to $70 USD for project materials.           

- Use of the upcoming ASU-UD Maker Innovation Space           

- Mentoring from technical supervisor team

The teams selected to continue to Round 2 will begin to develop projects, finish models/prototypes, get user feedback (surveys from community, or public votes on online posts, etc.), and prepare for Final Project Presentations on May 20, 2017.

20 May, 2017: Round 2 competition - Project Presentations

Presentations in Danang, Vietnam.

Selected 8-10 teams will present their Final Projects.

Final Projects are assessed completely by the WEPICS Board of Judges.

The Board of Judges will determine the best projects by:           

- Applicability in community – determined by votes, feedbacks, surveys, etc.           

- Innovation           

- Economic feasibility1st and 2nd Place prizes will be awarded to the top Two (2) Project Presentations.

Eligibility Criteria

Participants include but are not limit to female students, lecturers, researchers, entrepreneurs, and others who are interested in STEM. To be eligible to enter this competition: A project team must be made up of four (4) or fewer individuals. Project teams MUST be led by women. All prize eligible team members must be Vietnamese. Proposed ideas and products MUST be original – not previously submitted to any other class, competition or program
