Workshop: EPICS design process

Attendees: Faculty members from BUILD-IT and non BUILD-IT universities


Expected Outcomes:  The purpose of the workshops is to introduce the EPICS program, project-based learning combined with service learning and entrepreneurial mindset. The workshop will prepare new faculty to lead EPICS’ student teams to design, build, and deploy systems to solve STEM based problems for their communities. At the end of the workshop, faculty members will be able to understand and incorporate design based service learning and human-centered design principles into their project courses.

Note: Workshop capacity is limited. Priority will be given to faculty members who join Innovation & Entrepreneurship Challenge (IEC)

Day 1
8:30 – 9:00 am Registration and Networking
9:00 – 9:10 am Welcome and Workshop Introduction
9:10 – 9:30 am Overview of EPICS
9:30– 10:30 am EPICS Challenge & Rapid Prototyping
Faculty will use rapid prototype to learn and experiment with human-centered EPICS design
10:30 – 11:00 am Coffee and Tea Break
11:00 – 12:00 pm Design process breakouts and debrief
Faculty will break out into five groups to dive into specific areas of the EPICS design process. Each group will then report back findings to overall group. Wrap up and debrief about next steps
12:00 – 1:30 pm Lunch break
1:30 – 3:00 pm Workshop on Modules 1 & 2
Faculty will learn about Project Identification and Specification Development through the development of module skills and deliverables. The deliverables and techniques for these modules will be illustrated with case studies and examples.
3:00 – 3:15 pm Coffee and Tea Break
3:15 – 4:30 pm Workshop on Module 3
Faculty will learn about Conceptual Design through the development of module skills and deliverables. The deliverables and techniques for these modules will be illustrated with case studies and examples.

Faculty will learn about Detailed Design through the development of module skills and deliverables. The deliverables and techniques for these modules will be illustrated with case studies and examples.

Faculty will learn about Delivery and Project Retirement through the development of module skills and deliverables. The deliverables and techniques for these modules will be illustrated with case studies and examples.
