This workshop is designed for participants to engage in guided activities related to a curriculum redesign process related to project based learning. First, there will be a quick review of how various project-based learning implementation models (like EPICS) may be structured and project-based learning’s value in enhancing graduate readiness for industry. Then, details such as structuring a course syllabus, critical steps in guiding successful student projects, and monitoring student progress on projects will be addressed. In addition, methods of assessing student attainment of both technical and generic course learning outcomes will be explored.

Agenda
May 17, 2022 Project-Based Learning & Planning Curriculum Redesign
Morning Session
8:30 – 9:00 am Registration and Networking
9:00 – 9:15 am Overview of Workshop and Expectations
9:15 – 9:30 am Active Learning and Projects
Brief overview of active learning models and their positive impact on student learning and student readiness for success in industry. Project based learning is featured as one specific active learning model.
9:30 – 10:00 am Curriculum Models for Project-Based Learning
Specific curriculum implementation models and details related to successful project-based learning environments will be provided, with participants evaluating benefits, feasibility and implementation issues.
10:00 – 10:30 am Student Project Models
Student project models range from student self-selected, e.g., EPICS, to mandatory projects for all students. Participants will explore these different types to help inform their curriculum redesign.
10:00 – 10:20 am Coffee and Tea Break
10:20 – 11:30 am Curriculum Redesign Criteria and Constraints
Participant teams will develop curriculum redesign criteria and constraints. Depending on participant wishes, either a common set for all programs being redesigned or different criteria and constraints for different programs will be developed.
11:30 – 12:00 noon Participant Questions & Discussion
Afternoon Session
1:15 – 1:30 pm Registration and Networking
1:30 – 2:00 pm Initial Design of Project Structure
Based on the redesign criteria and constraints selected, program teams will design a target project structure--number of project courses, their placement in the program of study and general types of outcomes desired for those courses. The current program of study is NOT a part of this exercise.
2:00 – 2:45pm Initial Re-Design of Program of Study (Curriculum)
Using a program of study template, program teams will begin to build a redesigned program of study/curriculum using the desired project course structure. Programs that will either seek or maintain ABET accreditation will be made aware of ABET requirements related to projects and design work of students.
2:45 – 3:00 pm Coffee and Tea Break
3:00 – 3:30 pm Initial Re-Design of Program of Study (Curriculum) continued
At the end of this session, participants will turn in the draft curriculum for review. The drafts will be copied and returned to the participants.
3:30 – 3:45 pm Next Steps
Participants will decide on their program’s next steps—who will do what and when it will be done. These plans (and the initial re-design of curriculum) will constitute a measure of achievement accomplished during the workshop.
3:45 - 4:00 pm Wrap-up and Evaluation of Workshop
