Program Manager for Maker Innovation & Applied Projects
Representative Office Vietnam
Arizona State University

Based at the ASU Vietnam Representative Office in Ho Chi Minh City, Deren Temel is the Program Manager for Maker Innovation & Applied Projects within the USAID BUILD-IT Alliance. In this role, Deren facilitates the exchange between the BUILD-IT Alliance's industry and university partners to develop and implement hands-on, applied curriculum models focused on Project Based Learning.   These project-based learning experiences offer Vietnamese STEM students the practical skills and collaborative mindset necessary to carry an engineered solution from ideation to reality and are a crucial opportunity for industry-university linkage and curricular modernization. A primary focus of this role is to support the development, operations, and sustainability of USAID-sponsored Maker Innovation Spaces in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Can Tho. Maker Innovation Spaces are high-tech workspaces that give students the tools, space, and community needed to design, prototype, and test their solutions; the Maker Innovation Spaces support innovation, collaboration, and the deployment of applied-learning curricula within the BUILD-IT Alliance’s partner universities.

Throughout his career, Deren has worked to improve learning outcomes and project objectives with schools, NGOs, and government agencies throughout Asia. Deren brings over six years of experience in intercultural communications, team coordination, workshop facilitation, and proposal development to support the BUILD-IT Alliance.
