International Scientific Conference: STEM Higher Education for Mekong Delta Development

On February 12, 2014, the Prime Minister approved Decision No. 245/QD-TTg on the master plan for the socio-economic development of the Mekong Delta key economic region up to 2020 and roadmap to 2030. The aim was to “develop the Mekong Delta key economic region as a dynamic developmental region with a modern economic structure, comprehensive and modern infrastructure, improved material and spiritual life of the people, contributing a significant part to the economic growth of the country and to developing a thriving Mekong Delta as a whole to meet the general level of the country”; and the roadmap to 2030 is “The Mekong Delta key economic region will develop at a relatively high level, science and technology will become a major motivation in the socio-economic development of the localities in the region, and social organization will be of advanced level. With such objectives, skilled labour training and the creation of a close link between human resources development and development and application and science and technology for the provinces in the Mekong Delta are of significant importance. Unskilled labour will fail to help the Mekong Delta reap the benefits of international integration. Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) have emerged as a common trend in many countries in the region and worldwide and played an important role in promoting the social and economic growth. To contribute to developing skilled labour in the Mekong Delta to be more dynamic and adaptable to the ever changing economy and employment market, Can Tho University collaborates with Arizona University State and Association of Vietnam Universities and Colleges’ Institute of Science and Technology Innovation to organize an international workshop on STEM Higher Education for Mekong Delta development. The aim of this workshop is to create a platform for lecturers, education managers and scholars to raise their understanding of skilled labour training and quality assurance of STEM higher education; build a research network for lecturers, education managers and scholars to exchange knowledge and collaborate to study the issues in training skilled labour for Mekong Delta of Vietnam.
