Workshop will be conducted via Zoom. The Zoom link will be sent to participants when the event draws closer.

Instructors:  Dr. Scott Danielson, Ms. Ha Mai, Mr. Thai Tran -- Arizona State University

Attendees:  IUH’s interested administrators, program leaders and lecturers

Expected Outcomes:  These two workshops for IUH’s program groups illuminate stakeholder involvement and continuous improvement processes—important to different accreditation organizations like AUN-QA and ABET. ABET criteria will be used since AUN-QA requirements are satisfied by ABET while the reverse is not true. These two workshops provide a focus on program educational objectives and their review by stakeholders, documented review of program-level student learning outcomes to ensure coverage of all required elements and initial steps in assessment planning. Key outcome will be building accreditation team expertise in planning and implementing stakeholder input and the planning for assessment of student attainment of program-level student learning outcomes using course learning outcomes, fostering more effective and efficient accreditation preparations.

Agenda

Part 1 Wednesday, October 21, 2020: Focus on Stakeholder Involvement & Student Outcomes
7:45 – 8:00 am Zoom Registration and Entry into Program’s Zoom Room
8:00 – 8:10 am Welcome to Workshop and Zoom Approach
8:10 - 8:30 am Review of Workshop Pre-work
Instructors will provide a quick review of the program group’s pre-workshop assignment.
8:30 – 9:25 am Stakeholder Involvement
As an example, ABET Criteria 2. Program Educational Objectives makes specific demands of a program with respect to its program educational objectives—their wording and process by which they are created and reviewed. These requirements will be explored and program teams will identify actions needed to achieve appropriate stakeholder involvement—which would satisfy either ABET or AUN-QA.
9:25 – 9:40 am Zoom Break
9:40 - 11:00 am Student Outcomes
Contrary to AUN-QAs non-prescriptive approach, ABET Criteria 3. Student Outcomes makes specific demands of a program with respect to its student outcomes, e.g., the knowledge, skills, attitudes and abilities of graduates. These requirements will be explored and program teams will identify any actions needed to select/write appropriate student outcomes—which would satisfy either ABET or AUN-QA.
Part 2 Thursday, October 22, 2020: Focus on Continuous Improvement Basics
7:45 – 8:00 am Zoom Registration and Entry into Zoom Room
8:00 – 9:25 am Continuous Improvement System Requirements
While both AUN-QA and ABET require continuous improvement systems, ABET’s Criteria 4. Continuous Improvement makes specific demands of a program with respect to continuous improvement that are significantly different than AUN-QA. Yet, an ABET compliant continuous improvement of student learning satisfies AUN-QA requirements. So, ABET’s Criterion 4 requirements will be explored and steps in creating a satisfactory system will established. Use of performance indicators, course learning outcomes and performance targets are featured.
9:25 – 9:40 am Zoom Break
9:40 – 10:50 am ABET Criteria 4 Requirements continued
Participants will begin development of a strategy to implement continuous improvement within their programs.
10:50 – 11:00 am Homework Assignment for November 10, 2020
